Adlai Estes and Joe Smith . Litho tab for Adlai Stevenson and his running mate Estes Kevauver from 1956. The tab is half an inch wide by one inch in height. Joe Smith refers to an event at the 1956 Republican National Convention where one of the delegates put in for nomination "Joe Smith" for vice president as a protest against then Vice President Richard Nixon. Joe Smith was not a real person , but the Stevenson campaign used "Joe Smith" in the campaign as a anti Nixon slogan. A tab would be worn by bending the upper tin part or "tab" so that it could fit on to the chest pocket of a suit jacket
