Dwight "IKE" Eisenhower Campaign Buttons. President Dwight Eisenhower known primarily by his nickname of IKE was elected president on the Republican Party ticket in 1952. His vice presidential running mate and future president, was Richard Nixon. A General in the U.S. Army prior to entering politics, Eisenhower was the last person elected President who did not hold elective office prior to his Presidency. General Eisenhower however was well know to the American people as he was the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during War War II. A five - star general, Eisenhower oversaw the successful invasion of France , known as D-Day, in June of 1944. During his presidential campaign the "I Like Ike" campaign button became one of the most famous campaign slogans in political history.
