August 26, 2018 - Senator John McCain of Arizona, the 2008 Republican Party presidential nominee, died yesterday. McCain served his county for over 60 years as Navy Officer and United States Senator. Seeing combat as a Naval pilot during the Vietnam War, McCain survived 5 1/2 years as prisoner of war before being released in 1973.
In the 1980's, McCain began his political career in Arizona by first being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and then to the U.S. Senate in 1986. Nicknamed the Maverick for his fierce independent spirt, McCain initially sought the presidency in 2000. Though he lost the nomination to George W. Bush in 2000, McCain successfully won 2008 Republican Party Presidential nomination.
Upon his death McCain received praise from both Republicans and Democrats as an American hero who had a deep and enduring love for the United States of America.
