George McGovern Campaign Buttons. George McGovern was a United States Senator from South Dakota who in 1972 was the Democratic Presidential nominee. Initially, McGovern selected as his vice presidential running mate Missouri’s Senator Thomas Eagleton. Following reports that Eagleton received electro shock therapy in the mid-1960s, he left the ticket on August 1, 1972 and was replaced by Sargent Shriver. Pictured here are George McGovern campaign buttons that feature him with both Eagleton and Shriver. 1972 was the year that the psychedelic art of the the 1960s finally caught up with political campaign materials. George McGovern campaign buttons were designed with a wide selection of vibrant colors and images to reflect McGovern's appeal to the youth of America.
